Juvenile Shad Behavioural Deterrent Trials

We were commissioned by Dwr Cymru Welsh Water to investigate the potential for the use of an acoustic behavioural deterrent for the protection of young of the year twaite shad at water intakes. The study included experimental and field based acoustic deterrent trials as well as the capture of young of the year and adult fish and a captive breeding and rearing programme. Methods of successful shad capture, handling, transport and husbandry were developed and refined over the course of the project. A range of ultrasound frequencies and amplitudes were trialed to attempt to evoke both startle and avoidance reactions.
