River Dee Fish Entrainment Survey
APEM was jointly commissioned by three water companies to undertake a detailed long-term assessment of the impact of drinking water abstractions on fish populations within the Welsh Dee Special Area of Conservation (SAC), an important salmon river with considerable conservation interest. We used a variety of methods to evaluate the level of fish entrainment at six drinking water intakes, identifying the number of fish drawn in and assessing the number that subsequently passed through the screens. The investigation, which involved close liaison with the regulator and conservation agency, was designed to determine the impact of the loss to the fish populations and the overall effect on site integrity.
