For our last cryptic competition the critter (which is pictured below) was Normandia nitens from the Elmidae family. Well done to everyone who got it right this month. There can only be one winner so a big congratulations to Marie Donald from the Aberdeen - you are our lucky selected winner! Your prize is on its way to you!

After each competition we will publish an article written by one of our in-house taxonomy experts in the Invertebrate ID Tips section of our website. This will provide some professional tips on identifying tricky species within that particular family. We believe that accurate species level data are essential to underpinning proper monitoring and management of the environment and that these specialist skills should be fostered through the sharing of expertise. We are hoping to cover all of the BMWP scoring families eventually and will add a new article to our ID Tips section after each critter competition has closed. Keep checking back to get the full set!
