About APEM

APEM Limited is Europe’s largest specialist aquatic environmental consultancy. We offer our clients an integrated approach to every aspect of the investigation and management of freshwater catchments and marine habitats and operate UK wide and internationally. Our consultants are recognised experts in their fields, and as a company we pride ourselves on our commitment to scientific rigour and an excellent service in providing solutions to our clients. With the continued focus from the EU Water Framework Directive on assessing ecological status, it is crucial to be able to accurately identify the taxonomic groups sampled from the aquatic environment.

About the role

We are currently looking for a high-calibre and motivated aquatic scientist to join our Phytoplankton taxonomy team in our Stockport laboratory.

APEM Biolabs is synonymous with high-quality analysis, large capacity and fast turnaround. Clients either send us their samples directly or they are collected by APEM staff as part of a wider project. The specification of analyses provided is tailored to the needs of the project, with flexibility being one of our strongest priorities. APEM Limited is a champion in fostering the specialist taxonomic skills that are in increasingly short supply and is committed to providing rewarding careers and long-term professional development for aquatic taxonomists.

As well as identification of phytoplankton, the role will also involve an element of training, the organisation of laboratory work schedules and writing project reports and proposals. You will therefore be expected to be able to meet tight deadlines, and deliver projects within budget.

Our benefits package includes 25 days holiday (increasing to a maximum of 30 days in line with length of service), pension, company profit share, private medical insurance, health cash plan, group income protection, death in service insurance, childcare vouchers, cycle to work scheme, company maternity and paternity pay.

About you

As well as having excellent taxonomic skills and extensive experience in the identification of phytoplankton to genus or species level, you will have wide-ranging experience of identifying phytoplankton from different habitats and regions of the UK. You will have a proven track record of participation in AQC systems as well as of having carried out AQC or audits of other analysts samples.

You will also be able to demonstrate experience of training staff in this field and you will have excellent communication skills along with the ability to guide and effectively communicate with other members of the team of differing abilities.
