Helen Atkin - Aquatic Scientist

I am Helen Atkin (the 100thAPEM Employee!) and I started as an Aquatic Scientist with APEM in October and will be based in the Edinburgh office. My watery career started at Stirling University where I studied Marine Biology and Aquaculture, followed by an M.Sc at Heriot Watt University in Marine Resource Development and Protection. Since then I have worked for the Scottish Coastal Forum, the RSPB as an Aquatic Ecologist and at Stirling University as an Aquatic Consultant, where I was involved in the environmental regulation of aquaculture.
I have had lots of adventures and have travelled all over the world. I studied the migration of Black Land Crabs in San Andres, Colombia, worked for a shark research laboratory in the Bahamas (Bimini) where I got to free swim with Lemon’s, Hammerheads, Tigers and Bulls (which looking back was pretty crazy), and most recently I ‘flew’ across 1 km wide canyons whilst working as a zipline guide in British Colombia, Canada, which was fantastic fun!
I enjoy diving and snorkelling whenever I can get in the water, hiking, surfing, snowboarding, horse riding and I play underwater hockey on occasion. I have also been involved in amateur dramatics for many years.
