Robert Moores - Graduate Scientist

I’m Rob Moores and I’ve recently joined APEM as a Graduate Scientist. My first few weeks have been a busy few weeks, but I’m starting to get my head round it all now. I’m really enjoying all aspects of the job and I feel like I’m learning a lot.

I graduated from the University of Plymouth with a BSc in Ocean Science. The degree covered a great mix of subjects and gave me good background knowledge of the marine sciences. I wrote my dissertation on tidal power and I still find marine renewables a fascinating subject - it is something I am looking to get involved in further as my career progresses.

Since graduating I have had a range of jobs, from working in sales, to a management position, with a bit of charity work as well. However, my last position as a field scientist for a small environmental consultancy firm in Australia called Clearwater Ecological has definitely been my favourite position. This is probably the main reason I was so excited to start with APEM and be involved in more varied field work. I’m really enthusiastic about getting involved in all of the projects undertaken by APEM, and I’m particularly looking forward to learning electric fishing and seine netting techniques.

My two main passions in life are snowboarding and travelling which I like to combine as often as possible.  I’ve done two seasons in British Columbia, Canada and when I was at university I competed in national and international events. If I’m not stood on a board in the snow I like to be on one in the ocean and I’ve spent most of my life getting involved in surfing, windsurfing and wakeboarding, with varying degrees of success. I’m also a big fan of music and love going to gigs and festivals, so if you see me with my headphones on, standing on a snowboard, in the Alps, I’ll probably have a smile on my face!
