Rosalind Jukes - Graduate Scientist

My name is Roz Jukes and I have joined APEM as a Graduate Scientist on the field team in the Stockport office.
My degree is in Ecology and Conservation Management which I gained at the University of Central Lancashire. After university I became a Field Research Assistant for the University of Leeds working on a project that was comparing the effect organic and conventional farming techniques had on biodiversity at different spatial scales. For this I was carrying out a wide range of field work surveys on birds, insects and plants.
From this I moved on to become a Field Ecologist with Aspect Ecology based in Banbury, this role involved carrying out terrestrial ecology surveys such as bats and reptiles as well as some of the aquatic ones such as newts, crayfish and water voles.
I decided I would like to specialise my area of expertise away from general ecology and focus on aquatic ecology which is when I learned about APEM’s unique opportunity to gain experience in this area of work by joining them as a Graduate Scientist. So far I have already gained a RYA Power Boat Level 2 certificate, Emergency First Aid certificate and been trained in Electric Fishing to Environment Agency standards. In the coming months I am looking forward to learning the many water quality and fisheries survey techniques which APEM carry out and developing my skills as a field scientist.
My interests include going to gigs and festivals, cycling and swimming. I have also spent a year travelling and working abroad, mainly in Australasia, and am currently enjoying seeing lots the UK whilst carrying out fieldwork.
