Surveying habitats from the air with high resolution still photography offers significant benefits over traditional, ground or boat-based surveys. It is a cost effective option and provides a permanent electronic record that can be revisited at any time. Aerial surveys are the perfect tool for recording baseline conditions for the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). They help us to accurately record morphological change, prioritise habitats for restoration and identify and count a range of organisms, such as sea birds and mammals.

APEM's aerial surveys are unique. They are primarily driven by a scientific need rather than a requirement to map. We use imaging as another tool to answer complex environmental and biological questions. The company has invested in aircraft suitable for on- and off-shore survey, and all are fitted with bespoke imaging equipment.

This cutting edge system reduces operational costs by streamlining and speeding the image collection process through specialised digitising, flight planning, photo acquisition and reporting/archiving tools. Through proprietary image processing algorithms, we can conduct detailed geomorphological analysis of a range of riverine features and provide a comprehensive investigation of some of the key components of the WFD. What's more, we can also conduct before and after surveys of offshore seabird populations and marine mammals.

Our aerial capabilities allow us to survey large geographical areas quickly and economically at a range of resolutions. This is the perfect solution to problems caused by remote or inaccessible locations and establishes a permanent record of habitat, changes in which can then be objectively assessed over time.
