Surveys for Offshore Wind Farms

Using high resolution digital stills images has allowed us to identify sea birds and mammals to species level from over 1000ft. Surveying from such a high altitude means protected bird populations need not be disturbed by low flying aircraft. Projects in the Carmarthen and Liverpool Bays and the south and east coasts of England have perfected our ability to count and assign accurate GPS coordinates to each and every bird and marine mammal. The information we generate is invaluable for developers and provides robust, defensible data for use at public enquiry. Our bespoke software not only facilitates bird ID, but allows us to extract flight height and disection data. APEM has been contracted to carry out 'Round 1', 'Round 2' and 'Round 3' wind farm aerial surveys for energy developers and The Crown Estate.
