APEM has undertaken diatom studies in freshwater, estuarine and marine environments since the company’s inception in 1987. Our diatom team is expanding and we are seeking to recruit experienced and enthusiastic diatomists who will participate in the collection, preparation and enumeration of diatom samples.
Diatom-based monitoring methods now form one of the freshwater biological quality elements under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). APEM have kept abreast of legislative requirements and are proud to be the only UK laboratory to offer UKAS accredited analysis of diatom samples to the standards required by the WFD. In addition we also have UKAS accreditation for our in-house method of analysing marine and estuarine diatom samples. We have a dedicated diatom laboratory for the preparation of diatom slides, excellent high power microscopes with phase contrast, a wide selection of taxonomic literature to aid identification of diatom species from all environments and a friendly group of experts always willing to offer an opinion on any aspect of diatom-based work.
At APEM, our diatom-based work often follows the sample through from collection to enumeration, as diatom samples are frequently utilised in the water quality studies behind EIAs associated with infrastructure development. Our field scientists are trained in the appropriate techniques to collect diatom samples from a range of environments, including the full WFD protocol for freshwater samples. Other samples are collected by clients as part of their monitoring networks and sent to us for preparation and enumeration. Our emphasis is on quality at all stages, and ensuring that our diatom staff maintain up-to-date knowledge in this rapidly changing field keeps us at the forefront of delivering high quality data: either raw count data for clients to use in the classification of waterbodies, or as synthesised and interpreted data as part of a wider project.
The role you play within the Diatom team will be dependent upon your experiences and position as highlighted in the grades / job descriptions featured on the vacancy page.
