Geomorphology Appointments

Geomorphology is a more recent specialism of APEM and we therefore have high potential for expansion within this area of our business. Developments in legislation relating to the aquatic environment mean that fluvial geomorphology increasingly needs to be taken into account when managing rivers. The Water Framework Directive (WFD) introduces the concept of ‘hydromorphology’ which refers to a combination of the hydrological regime, physical morphology and river continuity and is an important component of the good ecological status of rivers. We are therefore recruiting enthusiastic Geomorphologists at all levels and in all offices to make their mark and contribute to APEM’s long-term and sustainable growth.

Examples of the work undertaken by APEM in this area include field and modelling investigations into the impact of hydro-power schemes, impacts of farming and land use on water and habitat quality in rivers and the effects of climate change on river and estuarine habitats and processes. We adopt an interdisciplinary approach, which means that the results from geomorphological studies can be evaluated in relation to information from other disciplines, such as ecology and hydrology. This cross-cutting approach is relevant to modern approaches to environmental management and allows APEM to deliver projects with greater effect.

Geomorphological studies investigate issues such as the sources and fate of fine sediment in rivers; effects of water abstraction and augmentation on sediment transport and channel form; and impacts of hydro-power schemes on fluvial processes. Our large field team enables us to carry out field surveys of fluvial geomorphology and take field measurements of geomorphological variables, such as hydraulic geometry, channel slope and grain size distribution. APEM’s aerial survey capability allows us to undertake extensive surveys of fluvial geomorphology using aerial imagery. Our Fluvial Information System is a powerful tool for the analysis of these data and provides us with the ability to gain detailed information on river systems over a large spatial scale, allowing us to develop models and gain a thorough understanding of how these systems function.

This is a unique opportunity for a motivated Geomorphologist to join a dynamic and forward-thinking company at a key stage in its development.

The role you undertake within the Geomorphology team will be dependent upon your experiences and position as highlighted in the grades / job descriptions featured on the vacancy page.
