Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Appointments

GIS is increasingly an integral part of commercial workflows. APEM have reflected this trend by integrating GIS directly into its business, and continues to grow and expand its GIS capabilities. APEM’s advancement in GIS has opened up exciting opportunities for innovative, computer literate individuals, with experience of working with and managing GIS.

APEM are a multi-disciplinary, aquatic-science based, environmental consultancy undertaking work throughout the UK with our work covering environmental investigations and management in both freshwater and marine habitats. GIS plays a vital role in the project cycle, from project inception e.g. field survey planning, through to project delivery e.g. analysis and presentation of spatial data.

APEM GIS experts have detailed knowledge of the industry standard ESRI ArcGIS suite as well as other open-source and proprietary GIS packages, and combine this with the ability to interrogate and analyse a variety of raster and vector based spatial data. GIS related projects require effective data management to ensure other users have access to the latest and most accurate data available and requires an in-depth knowledge of the different types of raster and vector based datasets (either received from clients and/or generated ‘in-house’). These are skills that APEM scientists excel at. Data manipulation is another key skill required of our GIS experts, ensuring that high resolution aerial images are accurately georeferenced or habitat layers are digitized with the greatest precision. Other core skills include, figure production ready for distribution to clients, knowledge of creating and using scripts and tools to enhance productivity and good cartographical skills to create maps that allow end users to easily interpret the data. Ultimately working with GIS, requires you to work as part of a team providing support and expertise in providing powerful and analytical spatial data to complement project reports.

The role you undertake within the GIS team will be dependent upon your experiences and position as highlighted in the grades / job descriptions featured on the vacancy page.
