Hydrology Appointments

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) introduces the concept of ‘hydromorphology’ which refers to a combination of the hydrological regime, physical morphology and river continuity – the condition of which forms the basis of the attainment of ‘good ecological status or potential’. There is an ever increasing need to integrate hydrology into ecological and geomorphological studies and the Hydrologists in APEM provide specialist technical input to APEM’s rapidly developing hydro-ecology work stream. APEM is at a crucial stage in its development as a company and we are therefore recruiting enthusiastic Hydrologists at all levels and in all offices to make their mark and contribute to long-term and sustainable growth.

APEM undertakes hydrological surveys and investigations at river, lake and estuarine sites, as well as within man-made canal and dock environments. We specialise in assessing the impacts of changes in flow regime (including artificial impoundments, abstractions and discharges) on geomorphology and ecology. The nature of the work means that it is important to liaise with other teams within the company, providing input to a real variety of studies. Projects often involve contributing to environmental assessments and may include field surveys, data analysis, modelling and reporting, as well as project management, management of sub-contractors and client liaison.

Project teams have developed cross-cutting expertise which integrates biological, physical and chemical elements of the aquatic environment, allowing Hydrologists to work with APEM’s geomorphologists, ecologists, GIS specialists and aerial surveyors to deliver our client’s requirements.

Out on site we use a variety of techniques including differential GPS, sonar, aerial surveys, velocity meters and water quality probes to collect our baseline data. There are also opportunities to manage dedicated teams of surveyors and sub-contractors undertaking large and complex surveys. From here data analysis and modelling may be undertaken either in-house or by sub-consultants, depending on project requirements. Understanding the limitations and uncertainties associated with hydrological data and modelling, as well as the intended use of the data are key to providing a robust and reliable output for other teams within APEM and our external clients.

APEM is synonymous with delivering practical, client-focussed solutions to aquatic environmental problems, based on robust science and the application of Hydrology. This is a unique opportunity for a motivated Hydrologist to join a dynamic and forward-thinking company at a key stage in its development.

The role you undertake within the Hydrology team will be dependent upon your experiences and position as highlighted in the grades / job descriptions featured on the vacancy page.
