Image Analysis Appointments

As a response to the rapid growth of the Aerial survey business stream at APEM over the last 3 years the company has implemented an image processing workflow and is recruiting in this area at all levels throughout the company and in all offices.

Following the collection of very high resolution aerial imagery, APEM is looking to automate many of the post-processing steps in its workflow. The imagery is collected using RAW format before being radiometrically corrected using a camera model and converted to a GIS ready format. Image processing and automation is required at many steps in the aerial workflow and specialist areas of investigation include the application of rigorous lens models, image compression and format conversion, data management, radiometric and geometric calibration and correction, image classification and feature extraction. APEM staff are skilled in many of these areas but as the business continues to expand, new methods and skills are required to handle the vast number of images generated by our surveys.

APEM specialises in the extraction of ecologically meaningful information from high resolution imagery. The company has constructed the Fluvial Information System (FIS) which allows staff to rapidly derive water depth and sediment grain size data from the incoming imagery. These data are then analysed to identify and estimate, for example areas of salmonid spawning and juvenile habitats for the area of interest. This fascinating and cutting edge application is much sought after and is under continued research and development.

The following software packages are currently employed at APEM specifically for image processing and software development purposes: Matlab, ERDAS Imagine, ESRI ArcGIS. However, as a company driven by science, we are always looking to implement the latest and best technologies for the job in hand.

The role you undertake within the aerial survey team will be dependent upon your experiences and position as highlighted in the grades / job descriptions featured on the vacancy page.
