Ornithology within APEM has grown considerably over the last 3 years and that trend is set to continue. APEM has a dedicated team of highly experienced consultants and field staff and there are opportunities at all grades and across all office locations to join this team.
APEM carries out a variety of bird surveys and investigations, spanning both freshwater and marine environments, including wetlands, estuaries and offshore habitats. Assessment of seabirds in the marine environment is carried out by aerial survey, with high resolution digital stills imaging methods used to inform bird identification, abundance and distribution. Such surveys are key to projects involving offshore wind farm development, monitoring of protected areas and bird population studies. Projects often form part of a wider EIA and may include field work as well as reporting. Occasionally, the data has already been collected, such as when APEM undertakes an historical review, but in either case statistical analysis is often an integral part of the process. The ornithological team do not sit in isolation and can and do draw upon the wealth of knowledge from other disciplines within APEM such as the macroinvertebrate biologists and GIS experts.
Our client relationships are key to our success and listening and responding to our customers needs is paramount.
Projects can concentrate on over-wintering, breeding and migratory birds, and associated survey work may entail conventional land-based methods or aerial survey. Bird identification skills are important, as is an understanding of waterbird ecology and relevant legislation. Treatment of data often involves GIS and appropriate statistical analysis to provide, for example, information on spatial distribution and abundance estimates. Appreciating the requirements of statutory and private clients allows our reporting to be specific and focused on customer needs and always to a high quality standard.
The role you undertake within the team will be dependent upon your experiences and position as highlighted in the grades / job descriptions featured on the vacancy page.
