APEM are committed to being the leading high resolution aerial survey provider for aquatic environments. As such, this part of the business has seen excellent growth over the past 3 years and continues to expand rapidly. We are therefore recruiting remote sensing specialists at all levels throughout the company and in all offices.
The main data source at present is imagery collected using the camera system in the company’s Vulcanair P68 Observer 2 aircraft. This is typically collected at spatial resolutions of between 3 cm and 10 cm, utilising a number of lenses and an infra-red filter. As the remote sensing component of the company grows, and imagery as a data source becomes widely accepted throughout the wider consultancy sector, there will be a need to utilise a wide variety of imagery including data from various satellite based sensors. APEM are the current market leaders for high resolution aerial photography and look to maintain this position. The driver for the collection and analysis of these image datasets is always ecological, specifically for the aquatic environment. The main outputs are generally GIS-ready files containing ecological information extracted from the imagery for the site under study. To provide such output, the Aerial Team utilises industry standard software for its data management and analysis (e.g. ERDAS Imagine, ESRI ArcGIS) as well as programming bespoke solutions using Matlab.
With tried and tested workflows in place, there will be opportunities to develop these further as new staff join the team and imagery volumes increase. Commercial remote sensing in the ecological sector requires a balance between realistic costs and developing specialised methodologies for specific analytical tasks. This is a specialist sector and APEM are well placed to provide challenging and interesting positions for motivated remote sensing scientists.
