Cousins India and Amelia wanted to create a surprise airline-themed wedding, complete with a pleasure flight.
CBBC were put in touch with APEM and we were able to arrange one of our aircraft and a pilot to help make the girls’ ideas a reality.
The aircraft was flown by APEM’s chief pilot, Ben Chapman, who took on the role of ‘Captain Ben’, with India and Amelia excited to become the airline’s air hostesses. The CBBC production team had created an entire imaginary airline, IndiAmelia Airways, with uniforms, logos and signs.
Ben said: “India and Amelia were flawless in their duties as air hostesses and a delight to work with. The whole day was a pleasure to be involved in.”
When the happy couple arrived they enjoyed a 30-minute pleasure flight with Ben and their ‘air hostesses’ before landing back at Hawarden airport near Chester, where APEM’s aircraft are based.
Meanwhile, back on the ground the production team had carried out an elaborate makeover on one of the aircraft hangers, transforming it into the headquarters for IndiAmelia Airways, where the couple’s guests awaited them.
APEM’s three aircraft are more usually to be found carrying out high definition aerial surveys. But with up to ten seats available, our Britten-Norman Islander can also be used for charter flights, and it was this aircraft that became IndiAmelia’s star attraction for a day.
APEM’s ground operations manager, Dave Taylor, explained: “Unlike most companies that specialise in aerial surveys, we have our Air Operator Certificate.
“This is granted by the Civil Aviation Authority after rigorous assessment and ensures the highest standards of quality and safety – the same standards that large airlines have to meet – and it allows us to carry passengers.
“Our pilots and staff are also specifically trained and qualified to carry out commercial air transport work and always relish the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise, particularly with such enjoyable and worthwhile activities as IndiAmelia Airways.”
