Benefits of aerial surveys for land use mapping

Our aerial surveys give clients a highly accurate picture of their most valuable business assets and allow them to monitor changes to the assets over time.

The surveys complement traditional field surveys in a way that is accurate and repeatable. They are a way for clients to monitor and map their land with minimal disturbance to people or animals and with 100 per cent coverage even in the most remote locations.

Using aerial surveys to map land use

Our scientists have expertise and knowledge across a wide variety of fields and are able to address a range of problems for clients, over landscapes that vary from estuaries to upland heaths

We use a multi-tier, rule-based approach to habitat mapping that takes into account the tone, texture and context of the imagery, whether it be bespoke data that has been commissioned, readily available satellite data or a combination of the two.

We use the characteristics of the earth’s surface, as seen from the imagery, to extract a thematic representation of the land surface. The process is semi-automated, helping clients to make informed decisions in a timely and cost-effective way.

In addition to detailed land cover maps, APEM can also generate accurate orthomosaics, topographic maps, photo-realistic 3D models and 360-degree virtual flyovers of the study area.
