Our macroinvertebrate scientists
Reliable and accurate data are essential to produce robust classifications of rivers and lakes and inform environmental management decision making. APEM’s extensive experience in macroinvertebrate sample analysis, together with stringent quality assurance that exceeds the UK regulator standard, ensures that our data are of the highest integrity.
Our large team of macroinvertebrate specialists have many years of taxonomic experience and keep up-to-date with new additions to the British fauna including invasive species. Additionally, in-depth training enables us to resolve specialist groups such as Chironomidae larvae to species level.
As Europe’s largest dedicated aquatic biology laboratories we offer unrivalled capacity and response times. In 2014 we completed – within schedule – the largest contract ever awarded by the Environment Agency for macroinvertebrate sample analysis, comprising more than 3,000 samples.
Macroinvertebrate analysis and reporting
We are fully conversant with standard sampling methods in all freshwater aquatic habitats, including RIVPACS, airlift and Surber, amongst others. This includes bankside analysis in the field when required, for example during pollution incident assessments.
Our data reports include WHPT/ASPT, LIFE, PSI and CCI as standard. We are also fully conversant with RICT, the tool required for providing classifications of water bodies in the UK that are compliant with the requirements of the Water Framework Directive.
For more in-depth studies our freshwater specialists provide appropriate statistical analysis and modelling capability to enhance understanding of our river and lake systems.
